IP Network Engineer – Contract
Location: Dublin (with occasional travel to data centre and POP sites)
Rate: €460 per day Engagement: Day Rate Contract

Sparktel are currently recruiting for an experienced IP Network Engineer to join our client on a day rate contract basis. Our client is a leading Irish telecommunications and connected entertainment operator, part of a major international communications group with operations across multiple European countries. They deliver broadband, TV, mobile and business connectivity services nationwide, and their Core IP Network sits at the heart of everything they do.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Service Provider network engineer to join a small, expert team responsible for shaping the future of one of Ireland's most significant Core IP networks. The role focuses primarily on build and core migration activity, with exposure to design changes, lab development, and the rollout of new services across the IP estate.
The successful candidate will report to the Core & Access Network Senior Manager and will work closely with IP Architects on the evolution of the network architecture. The role will appeal to a strong technical engineer who enjoys hands-on design and build work in a multi-vendor service provider environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, build and implement MPLS configuration changes across the Core IP Network.
  • Plan and deliver physical interconnect and service migrations, including IP transit implementation and migrations.
  • Configure and support core network elements — P, PE, BNG, routers and aggregation switches — across a multi-vendor estate.
  • Carry out hardware and software upgrades and migrations within agreed maintenance windows, in adherence with Change Management procedures.
  • Develop first-of-type bespoke services within the lab environment, and build scripting and templates to enable Engineering teams to roll these out at scale.
  • Work alongside IP Architects to help shape the future design of the Core IP Network.
  • Manage IPv4 and IPv6 address requirements across the estate.
  • Raise complex faults with vendor TAC teams, replicating issues in the lab where required to drive resolution.
  • Define and ensure compliance with handover processes from Service Delivery into Operations for new services.
  • Carry out occasional patching, line card / SFP swaps, and physical decommissioning of legacy equipment.
  • Maintain awareness of the latest networking trends and emerging technologies relevant to service provider networks.

Essential Skills & Experience
  • Relevant third-level qualification, ideally in telecommunications.
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as a Network Engineer with a major Telco / Service Provider.
  • JNCIA / JNCIS or other Juniper certifications (or equivalent demonstrable hands-on experience with Juniper and Junos).
  • Hands-on experience with Juniper MX and/or ACX series platforms.
  • Multi-vendor CLI experience across Cisco, Juniper, Ciena and Nokia.
  • Strong working knowledge of, and hands-on experience with, the following protocols and technologies: MPLS, LDP, Segment Routing, BGP, BGP-LU, OSPF, IS-IS, VPLS, EVPN, L2VPN, L3VPN, MVPN, HSRP, VRRP, QoS, IPv6, DS-Lite, RPKI, IP transit, VPNs, SIP and RTP.
  • Familiarity with industry best practice for power, cooling, cabling and rack space in data centre environments.
  • Excellent documentation skills.
  • Full clean driving licence.

Desirable
  • Cisco certifications — CCNA R&S, CCNP R&S, CCNP SP or equivalent.
  • Scripting experience in Python or similar.

The Person
  • First-class problem-solving skills — able to cut quickly to the heart of complex issues, often under tight time pressure.
  • A clear and effective communicator, able to translate technical detail into business impact for stakeholders and managers.
  • A team player who leads by example and raises the standard around them.
  • Methodical, with high attention to detail and genuine pride in quality of work.
  • Self-motivated and resourceful, comfortable working independently in a fast-paced environment, juggling priorities and embracing change.

Why Apply?
  • The chance to work on one of Ireland's most significant Core IP networks within a leading Service Provider environment.
  • Exposure to the latest networking technologies and the opportunity to contribute directly to the future architecture of the network.
  • Competitive day rate of €460 and the autonomy that comes with a contract engagement.
  • A small, expert team and a collaborative engineering culture.
