Data Centre Designer - Electrical Engineer
Location: Hybrid
Reporting to: Engineering Manager

Role Overview

Our client is seeking a highly skilled Data Centre Designer / Electrical Engineer to join their growing engineering team. This role plays a critical part in the end?to?end planning, design, and documentation of mission?critical data centre infrastructure. The successful candidate will design reliable, scalable, and energy?efficient electrical and physical infrastructure systems while collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver best?in?class technical solutions.

This position requires deep technical expertise, strong analytical capability, and the ability to operate within a fast?paced, high?standards environment.

Design & Technical Delivery
  • Develop detailed designs for data centre electrical infrastructure, including power distribution, UPS systems, generators, grounding, and emergency power systems.
  • Produce integrated designs covering electrical, cooling, networking, and physical layout considerations.
  • Conduct load calculations, power analysis, and system modelling to ensure reliability and efficiency.
  • Prepare one?line diagrams, schematics, layout drawings, and technical specifications using AutoCAD, Revit, or similar tools.
  • Evaluate and select electrical equipment such as switchgear, transformers, UPS systems, and generators.
  • Collaboration & Coordination
  • Work closely with architects, mechanical engineers, structural teams, and IT stakeholders to deliver coordinated, compliant designs.
  • Participate in design workshops, technical reviews, and cross?functional project meetings.
  • Support construction teams during installation and commissioning phases, ensuring systems are delivered as designed.
  •  Documentation & Compliance
  • Produce comprehensive technical documentation, including BOMs, design reports, specifications, and installation guidelines.
  • Ensure all designs comply with relevant standards and codes (NEC, IEEE, Uptime Institute, BICSI, local regulations).
  • Support site assessments, feasibility studies, and risk evaluations.
  • Project Support & Problem Solving
  • Identify design risks and propose practical, innovative solutions.
  • Provide technical guidance throughout the project lifecycle, including troubleshooting and optimisation recommendations.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and best?practice development within the engineering team.

Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in electrical engineering, with a strong focus on data centre or mission?critical facility design.
  • Technical Expertise
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, grounding, lightning protection, redundancy principles, and energy?efficient design.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical design tools.
  • Familiarity with data centre cooling systems, network architecture, and Tier classification principles.
  • Experience conducting load studies, short?circuit analysis, and system modelling (ETAP, SKM PowerTools advantageous).

  • Excellent analytical and problem?solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet demanding deadlines.
  • Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE), Chartered Engineer, or equivalent certification.
  • Uptime Institute Accredited Tier Designer or similar data centre?specific accreditation.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy integration and energy?efficiency strategies.
